Metadata

The chart below describes the metadata strategy used for this site, based on Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI) schema for use in Omeka digital library software. Our metadata strategy for applying the Dublin Core is based on the New York Heritage Metadata Dictionary and Best Practices Guide, version 2 (2014). For example, the “source”, “date”, “publisher” and “type” fields describe the original object, while the “format” field describes the digital version. Controlled vocabularies, such as Library of Congress Subject Headings, were used when possible to standardize the metadata language.

On each item record page, you will see Dublin Core metadata, followed by Item Type Metadata, which for a document includes a transcription of text from the item and information about the format of the original source document. Dublin Core XML files are also available for each item.

Farther down the page, the Document Viewer allows you to view the digital scans in a text-searchable portable document format (PDF).

Culinary Pamphlets Online was created as an educational project, and for our purposes, we have not digitized entire works, but rather one or two pages from each culinary pamphlet in the collection. The images provided therefore are representative samples. Nevertheless, the metadata provided, such as the “subject” and “description” fields, generally describe the items as a whole.
